Griglia Italian takeaway in Cleethorpes has been causing quite a buzz. In the run up to opening night, there were lots of posts floating around social media counting down to the big day.
You might wonder what’s got into the people of town – anticipating the opening of an Italian takeaway that anyone was yet to buy from. But word had spread who would be running the place and soon it was clear.
The head chef from the recently retired Valerie’s Italian would be back in the kitchen once again, giving you the opportunity to enjoy their well-loved cooking from the comfort of your own home.
Speaking as someone who would rather not cook, and loves to sample meals from new establishments, I decided to write this Griglia Italian takeaway (Cleethorpes) review. In the interest of disclosure, I paid for the meal myself and no one asked for the review (literally no one, but here I am anyway).
Griglia Italian Takeaway Cleethorpes Review

It’s fair to say we were expecting the food to be lovely and it absolutely was. When a local chef with their own fan base opens a takeaway, it’s kind of a giveaway that you’re going to love what you get. So – spoiler alert- this review is going to be a good one.
Ordering from Griglia Italian Takeaway in Cleethorpes
Ordering was pretty simple, all done from the Grimsby and Clee Eats app. If you don’t have this app, then you need to download it. It’s full of indie eateries from the local area – some of which aren’t on the other app (and if they are, they seem to cost a little more).
You can also order directly from the Griglia website. We pre-ordered for later in the evening and they were more or less on the dot. We figured since it was opening night and there was a bit of a buzz on Facebook that we’d get in there early and secure a tasty dinner.
Griglia Italian Takeaway – The Food

As I mentioned above, I already expected the food to be good. I was impressed with the choices on the menu, and ecstatic to find my favourite – salt and pepper squid – was one of the options.
Everything sounded like a posh version of some Italian favourites that you can get in your more run-of-the-mill pizza shops. I went for a Frutti Di Mare pizza (AKA a fishy pizza) while my husband opted for a Piri Piri Chicken Kebab. It felt almost scandalous not to go for the famously delicious lasagne, but I’m a sucker for a juicy prawn on my pizza!

The Frutti Di Mare pizza was better than I could have possibly imagined. I expected it to be tasty, but this was something else. The toppings were generous. All the flavours complemented one another. It was just an all-round winner.
The one thing I will say is that it came with an unpeeled prawn on the top. I don’t mind them, and I enjoyed eating it, but I know some people get a bit squeamish about that sort of thing. I’ll have to admit it was a bit of a jump scare when I opened it, but I still think it was a nice touch.

My husband went for the Piri Piri Chicken Kebab and this is what he had to say about it:
“This was the best chicken kebab I’ve had for years. The meat was of fantastic quality, and cooked perfectly with a lovely chargrilled taste to it. Size-wise, I could have easily split this with another adult. As it was so tasty though, I managed it all myself.
“Too often, kebabs can be really greasy, but this wasn’t an issue here, with the beautifully lean meat Griglia use dripping with tangy piri piri sauce instead. Even the salad was a step up from the usual sweaty bag of wilted lettuce you get from most places. It consisted of the usual salad items, but was kept fresh and crisp in an accompanying tub.”
Overall Impression of Griglia Italian Cleethorpes
It was a really great meal. I might even have it again at the weekend, it was just that good! I thought the menu had loads of options (and plenty more I’d love to try) and the food was even better than expected – and I had high expectations.
Definitely consider ordering from this place if you love posh pizzas and ace dinners cooked by a chef the locals love. Absolute winner. Definitely recommend.
