Does a standing desk help with back pain? We tried a standing desk to find out!

My husband has a lot of back problems and works as a writer, so he seemed like the natural choice for this experiment. He’s had a bulging disc in his lower back for a few years, and he has some muscular problems higher up too, which causes a fair bit of discomfort.

Because he’s got some existing issues, sitting at a computer for long periods adds to the pain and discomfort in his back. The main problem with that is that he’s a writer, so his job normally involves sitting at a computer for long periods. Not ideal!

We’ve been looking into solutions for a little while, and the consensus seems to be that he should stand to work, or at least change position a few times. We managed to get our hands on a fabulous adjustable desk from Flexispot. As you may have guessed, the height of the desk top is adjustable, meaning you can stand or sit while you work. As my husband needs to shift about during the day, this is perfect for him.

Sit Stand Desk Review – Does it Help Back Pain?

sit stand desk

I’ll start by saying having a desk that you can adjust the height of is a godsend. It’s space saving because I can sit at it when my husband isn’t using it, but he can stand at it when it is. This means one desk doing the work of two, so it takes up way less room. We take it in turns to work anyway because we have kids, so we wouldn’t use it at the same time. Having said that, the desk is wide, and could definitely fit both of us working side by side if we fancied it.

Does a standing desk help with back pain? A Review

standing desk

My husband gave this desk a good try and found it helped a lot. Sitting hunched at a computer all day isn’t great for anyone’s back, especially when that back already has a few conditions going on. Standing to work has seen a huge improvement in the way his back feels, and in turn has helped his productivity too. It’s amazing what you can do when you make yourself comfortable!

Was the desk hard to assemble?

I can’t pretend I put the desk together myself, but I did see my husband do it and he found it easy enough. It didn’t take him long to follow the instructions and have the finished article ready to go shortly after, and I’m sure he won’t mind me mentioning he’s not known for his handiness – so if you’re not too handy either, don’t let that put you off!

How do you use a standing desk?

It’s pretty simple to use the desk, just plug it in and adjust it at will! You can move it up or down by pressing the arrows and it’s a relatively quick process. There’s also a shallow drawer in the desk which is pretty convenient for keeping pens and paper.

Another fab feature is you can charge things like your phones and iPads etc with the in built charging points. It’s great to have everything at your fingertips.

Final Thoughts

It’s well worth investing in an adjustable desk if you suffer with certain types of back pain. I’ve also found out it’s a lot healthier to work standing up than it is to sit down all day. This means the desk is great choice for anyone who’s into taking care of their health while they keep their desk job.
